As we might have expected the 14-24mm is excellent going where no lens of its type has gone before. Far sharper than the fixed lenses of its type, it lacks all the things you want to be missing such as coma or softness at the apertures, making the other lenses of its variety look like pale imitations.

Nikon’s 14-24 mm F/2.8 is just about the sharpest 14 and 18mm lense on the market in head to head competitions, and far sharper in the corners at f/2.8 than anything has a right to be.

In point of fact Nikon has taken a difficult task and made it look oh so easy, making the 14-28 sharp all over, although it does get a bit softer at the f/2.8 in an FX frames farthest corner. Still you’d have to say that this lens is exactly what they say it is, and their claims of excellence are certainly backed by the evidence. The proof as they say is in the pudding.

There isn’t another ultra wide that’s going to come close to this clear and sharp picture even when its wide open.

Looking at the actual photos you may not see the improvement in them, but one sure way to view it is to look into the corners of your FX frame when its wide open, where most of the previous lenses are going to run into trouble. The one drawback that’s seen is that you can’t filter the new 14-24 like you can the older models.

In addition to a crisp perfect shot, Nikon seems to have tamed their ghosts and flare issues as well, with little more than a single dot showing up when shooting with sunlight on the lens. The lateral color fringes that other lenses add to your photo are simply non existent, which is something of a surprise in a lens of this type as well. .

One thing that strikes you nearly immediately is that there isn’t any corner darkening in your images(what photographers call falloff) That’s not the norm and we find it incredible that its so conspicuously lacking in the new Nikon. With this kind of workmanship, and a lens that is exactly what they say it is, all in all it looks like Nikon has hit a home run.
