The GA-MA78GM-S2H, part of Gigabyte’s S series of motherboards, is an AMD AM2+ platform board in a micro ATX form factor using the 780G (northbridge) and SB700 (southbridge) chipsets. The motherboard’s AM2+ CPU socket supports AMD’s Athlon line as well as the new quad core Phenom processors. Among its many high performance features are the HyperTransport 3.0 system bus, integrated DDR2 1066 memory controller, DirectX 10 compliant integrated graphics and ATI’s Hybrid Graphics technology - Hybrid CrossFire X. The GA-MA78GM-S2H is certified for Microsoft Windows Vista and is also AMD Live! ready.
The motherboard offers 4 DIMM slots for DDR2 RAM modules (up to 1066 MHz) and features dual channel support. WIth the 4 RAM slots, the board can support up to 16 gigabytes of total system memory.
Providing the graphics processing power is an integrated ATI Radeon HD3200-based graphics (compliant with DirectX 10). In addition to the Integrated Graphics Processor (IGP), the GA-MA78GM-S2H also offers a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot for a dedicated video card. Through the ATI Hybrid CrossFireX technology, the IGP and a compatible VGA card can work in tandem to bring even better graphics. Additional GPU features include ATI SurroundView (which allows the system to support more than 4 monitors at once).
The Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H supports true 1080p HD resolution and features an HDCP-compliant (video only) HDMI out and DVI-D out. It can also output High Definition audio (2/4/5.1/7.1-channel) with its Realtek ALC889A codec.

The fans barely made a sound throughout a two-hour HD movie, and the case was only moderately warm afterward. The 780G won’t knock your socks off in terms of power, but for what it is—a silent PC that will offer HD video and adequate gaming performance in your living room—it’s well worth the investment. AMD may not have the performance crown when it comes to its processors. In fact, Phenom has a lot of competition from Intel and a long way to go if they want to regain the top crown they stole from Intel quite some time ago. Read more
