This extreme router, offering rapid transfer of typical data as well as music and photos, seems to hold its own in speed tests against other comparable routers, even at further distances, where it truly excels.

DIR-635 with "RangeBooster N" (802.11n wireless) but adding a 4 port giga switch. The USB port on the back is for a USB flash drive to transfer XP's WCN (Windows Connect Now) wireless security settings and can't be used as a print server or for a USB hard drive. While the DIR-655 fails to come close to the rated 300Mbps speed that it claims, the truth is it does have better range and performance that my existing 802.11g network that I've been happy with for the past couple of years. When we swapped out the 802.11g hardware with all 802.11n hardware, we saw performance gains of 4x at close range. As the distance increased, performance of all the networks decreased. I needed to upgrade from my BEFSR41 router to add wireless network ability at home. Was hesitant given my old router was 100% reliable over 6+ years and the reviews of wireless N routers were mixed. Have been using the DIR-655 for 2 weeks, and am very satisfied. The install went pretty smoothly (took a few hours) w/ the included Network Magic setup wizard.
